How the author presented the coterie (AKA monsters) was amazing and so different. These aren't the tame, romanticized creatures that are more human than monster, but truly monstrous creatures with a few humanoid traits. For goodness sakes, these are monsters that eat people and admit it! The author created a cast of characters and rules and stuck to it. Zoe, wasn't too bad as a heroine either, although she wasn't nearly as interesting as the monsters. Zoe stumbled into their world by pure chance but saw this new world as a chance for a new start. I admired the way she kept an open mind about the coterie. She was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until it was proven otherwise. And when it was proven otherwise, she didn't fly off the handle and blame everyone. She understood that this world did not work like her old one.Even though I cannot fit this story into one particular niche, I really enjoyed it. It even had a dash of romance at the end pleasing me to no end. All in all, it was a well-rounded story with characters that were realistic (as true as paranormal stories can be anyway), a story line that was unique yet familiar, and room for another story.
